Labels are not all......

Labels are not all ...................

This arrived this morning.

Now, I like good gear.

I like good down gear.

And in my opinion PHD make some of the best down gear in the World.

But, I've seen reviews of this and thought - umm .......... worth a punt.

Quelle surprise. It's good. A good DWR finish to a good feel. The finish is good and the fit is just right.

Weighs very little and has been put in the same paragraphs as MB Ex light and MH Ghost Whisperer where comparisons have been made.

Ok, I'd love a PHD Wafer jacket, but, frankly, I don't need one.

But this was too good to pass up on.

More on this later - but, very good first impressions.

Ok, it's a Uniqlo Ultra Light Down Hooded jacket. Don't sniff at the label.

I am surprised just how good it looks and feels and for under £60 - just - it holds it's own against the big labels. 640 fill power is no where near the top notch gear, but, then for the weight and price it's magic.

For anyone who's wondering the down is sourced ethically, too. This was a big question in my mind.

    1. Last year I came across the down hooded gillet for £20. I think you got one?
This is full price: but compared to the MH or MB or PHD it's a snip!

  2. I turned them down. Still happy with that decision.

  3. I will never do any sort of review for gear that I haven't bought myself.

I just like to highlight gear from time to time.

  4. I think they are great. Sheila has 2. One hooded and one without and i have a gilet. I found they are just great value for money, oh so light. Ideal on their own when temperatures are not too low or as an additional piece of kit to give additional warmth when temps are low.

    1. Just about all the comments I found - before I bought it - were similar to yours.
Light and good value. I can't fault the quality of the jacket - for the price. I was concerned about the zips, but, even these are YKK and I've played with these with no problems.

  5. Absolutely brilliant. I wore my hooded jacket cooking tea outside on a camping weekend and it kept me toasty. Have worn my gilet a couple of times in the house when I have got in from work. Love them both and well worth the money. Just wish they did trousers!!!!!

    1. Thanks for your comments, too.

I don't think you'll find Uniqlo doing trousers!

But, if you want down trousers I can fully recommend the PHD Minimus Down Trousers. Expensive, but with last and last - great for around camp and for sleeping in.

  7. I've seen a few people say they got it cheaper.
    For £39 it's a real steal.
I can't believe how comfy it is to wear.

Great to see that you will be on the Challenge in 2014!
I'm still trying to decide a start point, but, my focus in on Archaracle.
Hope to see you either on route or in Montrose.

I forgot how much of a headache making a decision on start points was! :-)
